Tower of London London 2004
The Tower of London is one of the world’s major tourist attractions.
Founded by William the Conqueror in the 11th Century, it has been
the setting for many great events and during its 900 year history
has served as a royal palace and fortress, a prison and place of
execution, arsenal, mint, menagerie and jewel house. 2004 marked
the end of an eight year redevelopment project, improving the setting
of the Tower of London to befit its status as a World heritage site
and provide a new public space for London. Saper Glass played a
key role in the final phase of the project by undertaking major
works within the new ticketing facility, Welcome Centre, the newly
enlarged Tower Shop and the Vaults. Our works within the Welcome
Centre and Group Ticketing consisted of external structurally bond
glazing, framed entrance doors, feature louvers and cladding. Within
the Vaults we provide glazed screens and a structural roof light,
however it was the Tower Shop which saw the most dramatic transformation,
and here we provided new all glass entrances and display windows
within the building’s existing archways, and clad the new
extension with structurally bonded glass incorporating a framed
entrance doors and aluminium wall cladding. We also provide a structural
glass roof light running the length of the building above the staircase
leading up to new mezzanine level.
